Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth somewhere around XX - XX United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

This article was going to be sent out next weekend but it seems to be growing very big.

Do not rely on the information in the PNG Newsletter. It is possible that the info could be out of date or inaccurate.

* Port Moresby (POM) weather

Well after commenting on the weather situation recently the heavens opened and Moresby was almost flooded on the weekend.

* Lafanama Ousted

The Supreme Court declared the election of Eastern Highlands Governor Peti Lafanama void and ordered a by-election for the provincial seat. This brings to six the number of MP's whose election has been declared void by the courts.

* Orchid Show

The first PNG orchid show has been announced as a blooming success with more than 6000 visitors over a recent weekend.

Low Salary Earners

Prime Minister Bill Skate, will use K8 million from this years unused drought relief funds to finance the increase for low salary earners for the next 4 months. All public servants earning below K12,000 per annum will get an extra K25 per fortnight.

* More Gossip??

Due to a misunderstanding the police had Waigani Committal Court raise a bench warrant for Public Services Minister (Ian Ling-Stuckey) Stuckey, who is facing 6 charges failed to appear at the court. Apparently he went to the wrong courthouse. The charges were later dropped due to this confusion.

* East New Britain

The "Maus Bilong Tavurvur" radio station will be back on air soon (early next year) due to Japanese aid of approx. K8.5million.

* Pepsi

In a recent PNG Gossip newsletter I mentioned that 500ml plastic bottles of coke were on sale for K1.00. Pepsi have countered with a 600ml bottle for the same price.

* Post Courier

It's good to see that the Post Courier has finally fixed the inaccurate dates for their astrology / stars column after much prompting.

* Accommodation

Century 21 have the following properties available for rent. Prices are PER WEEK and no inspections were made to see what condition they are in..

* Appointment

Former cement company chief Joshua Kalinoe has been confirmed as the new managing director of the Investment Promotion Authority.

* Mt Hagen Coffee

According to the wife of the plantation manager death threats have been made against Mt Hagen coffee plantation staff. The plantation has been under siege for many weeks by someone who wants to takeover the plantation.

* Port Moresby Power

Half of Port Moresby has been plunged into darkness due to a backhoe digging up the main power cable at the Konedobu Elcom sub-station. It is estimated that it might take a week to fix the problem although some of the affected areas had power back within 10 hours. Not sure what really happened but several main transformers have been damaged and need replacing.

* Kerema

Governor Riddler Kimave has announced that a large multi-million Kina sea port facility will be built for the Gulf Province at Paia Inlet.

* Western Highlands

The Western Highlands Council of Women has declared the practice of giving away girls as compensation payments unacceptable.

* New Port Moresby Airport

Police have expressed concern about an apparent lapse of security at the new International Airport recently when the PNGBC foreign exchange desk was robbed. Normal passengers are amazed as well due to the fact that even passengers with tickets find it difficult to gain access to the building.

Also on the new airport I hear that some of the old Aussie airman are distressed due to the fact that "Jackson" does not get a mention anywhere at the new terminal. I believe they attempted to have a small plate attached to the building but couldn't find anyone who was interested in helping to commemorate Squadron Leader Jackson.

Gaming Board rescues PNGSF

THE NATIONAL Gaming Board (NGB) yesterday donated an additional K100,000 to support the Papua New Guinea contingent to next month's Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The chairman of NGB DANIEL Mapiria presented the money to the Sports Federation official to meet a shortfall of K156,000. The balance will be met in the form of player's K1,000 levy.

The Sports Federation Secretary General John Dawanincura was a happy man when he received the cheque stating that he could not raise enough money despite the successful "Celebrity Walk" and "Prime Minister's dinner".
