News Items

East New Britain
People who may be planning a visit to PNG or East New Britain this year, may wish to time it to coincide with the following:
The 8th National Mask Festival will be held in Rabaul town (at Queen Elizabeth II Park) from 21st July to 27th July 2002. The Tolai Warwargira will be held at the same time (21st-24th). It has been about 10 years since a Warwargira was held and it is expected to be an annual event from now on. A week of traditional culture etc. Air Niugini are offering discounted airfares into Rabaul (Tokua) during the week.
The New Britain Open Golf Tournament starts on 29th July for 1 week and discounted fares will also apply for the golf.
This promises to be a Fortnight in Paradise !!
Milne Bay
A 20-minute video is being filmed in Milne Bay Province and is expected to help bring in more tourists to the province.
Election Hostages
Their captors recently kept the people who were held hostage in a steel-cage. The captives are now home and looking well despite the ordeal they endured.
Manam Island
Peter Barter inconjunction with AusAID has installed radios at Dugulaba, Abaria, Bukere and Kolang villages on Manam Island. The villages will use the radios so that the government can communicate with the villagers. The four villages were the ones most affected by the recent eruption of the volcano on Manan Island.
Roadworks
Hubert Murray Highway and Boroko drive at five mile now has a temporary roundabout set up. the traffic lights have been removed and navigating through the intersection and the roadworks is a nightmare at times. Badili to Ela Beach is still under construction and the roadworks along Boroko Drive near St Joseph's school and Port Moresby High and Boroko East seems to be progressing very slowly.
Many residents of Port Moresby are concerned that every time a road is widened or altered the trees are bulldozed to the ground with little thought to the views of residents who do not seem to have a say in any planning around Port Moresby. The town is already hot and dusty and the trees are some of the few things that provide shelter from the hot sun as well as holding the dirt together during the middle of the dry season.
Smoking
A Department of Education study has shown that more students are smoking and that it is a major problem for schools. Some schools have reported that up to a third of upper primary and high school students are smoking and that this figure is increasing.
Australian Immigration Hours
The Consul at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby has supplied the following information. The Immigration Office is open to the public from 0800 - 1200 Monday to Friday.
The Consul has advised that processing standard temporary visitor and business visa applications requires lodgment with the Visa Office at least five days prior to the intended date of travel from PNG. Processing for permanent migration to Australia is a much more lengthy process. Members of the general public who require a visa to travel to Australia are advised to apply well in advance of their intended travel date. In particular, those persons who are not resident in Port Moresby, or those who need to undertake medicals, or those who are required to provide supporting documentation, should contact the Visa Office well before their intended date of travel. The timely lodgment of visa applications with full documentation will ensure prompt processing and avoid delays.
Miss PNG
A couple more contestants have nominated for the 2002 Miss PNG Red Cross Quest. The Galley restaurant is sponsoring a contestant for the first time and Air Niugini is sponsoring a girl from the company's flight services (catering) area.
Kabaleo Teachers' College
Thirteen new high covenant houses have been built at Kabaleo Teachers' college in East New Britain. The houses, mainly for teachers, have been constructed at a cost of K1.4 million by the World Bank.
Diplomatic Posts
Just before the elections four people have been appointed to head various diplomatic missions around the world for PNG. It is hoped that a new government does not revoke the appointments.
Puffer Fish
People have been warned to take care and not to become complacent when eating fish like the puffer fish. Two people have recently died after eating puffer fish.
United Nations Concert
Port Moresby International School held the annual United Nations Concert last weekend and whilst it was enjoyable it didn't seem to run as smoothly as previous years. Long breaks between acts and a 15-minute interval dragged on far too long for the little children.

Financial Institutions
Queen Elizabeth II
Twenty PNG style paintings of Queen Elizabeth II will be displayed at the Port Moresby Holiday Inn on the 5th of June. 20 Artists from different parts of PNG have painted the portraits. One lucky artist will have his/her work selected and given to Queen Elizabeth II.
Air Fares
Air Niugini has raised domestic airfares on all routes by five percent. The Kina has continued to fall against overseas currencies and unfortunately most items required by the airline, especially parts for aeroplanes, are bought in overseas currencies and even fuel, which is purchased locally, is tied to overseas pricing.
Motor Vehicle Hospital
The hospital built by the Motor Vehicle Insurance Trust is still unoccupied. despite being finished years ago. The only occupants of the hospital are security guards paid to look after the place.
Lakemata Jail
Inmates from Lakemata Jail, West New Britain are now resettled in Keravat Jail, East New Britain. It is hoped that the inmates will only be at Keravat for five months whist Lakamata is renovated after being condemned by health officials.

A youth is recovering in hospital after being shot for allegedly taking down election posters.
Health Expo
A successful Health Expo was held at Sir John Guise stadium for residents of Port Moresby last weekend. Visitors were able to have many free medical such as eye tests and breast cancer examinations etc. The Red Cross blood bank received many donations of blood over the course of the expo. About 31 exhibitors took part in the expo.
Porgera
Canadian miner, Placer Dome, looks set to gain total control of the giant Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. The company currently owns 50 percent of the mine but expects to increase this to 75 percent in the near future by buying out the Oil Search interest in the mine.

Fun Run
The annual fun run for the Sports Federation was run on Sunday 2nd June at most centres around the country. The money raised will be sued to send athletes to various events around the world.
Port Moresby Hospital
The TST group has donated K20,000 to the Port Moresby General Hospital so that the hospital can buy anesthetic drugs needed for various essential operations.
Polygamy
It has been reported that Justice Moses Jalina is concerned that women are attacking their husband's co-wives. He recently sentenced one wife who had attack another wife to over two years in jail.
Ramu Sugar
The government will soon announce a timetable for the sale of shares in Ramu Sugar. The government is planning to sell about 12 million shares in Ramu Sugar to the general public through a share listing on the Port Moresby Stock Exchange.
Election Advice
The Australian High Commission has the following advice for Australians living in PNG but this info may be of use to other than Australians. On the election itself the Aust High Commission has been watching developments closely. The High Commission will continue to do so and keep you informed if they feel there is anything specific that you should be aware of. In the meantime, they would encourage you to take simple precautions such as avoiding political rallies and public gatherings. You should also maintain a heightened level of security awareness, especially when travelling in the Highlands provinces.
The High Commission can also foreshadow that in line with their move towards establishing systems that enable direct contact with their numerous clients (such as e-mail), they are soon to launch a HF radio (selective calling) network throughout PNG. Primarily, it will function as a back-up system in case established means of communication fail. However, it will also enable them to establish communication links with clients whose primary means of communication is HF radio.
The High Commission had hoped to have this up and running before the election but a delay in the supply of equipment has meant it will take a further four to five weeks before they are ready to formally commence the network.

European Union staff have said that it would be too risky for them to send observers to the coming PNG elections.
