Remember that this mailing list is meant (mainly) for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time in this newsletter, is currently worth around

but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html -- The PNG Business Directory also has daily rates based from a PNG perspective

Want to find out more about Papua New Guinea? Try searching at -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo -- and -- http://www.michie.net/png_faqs or try the PNG Business Directory located at -- http://www.pngbd.com -- and the PNG Tourism Directory -- http://www.pngtd.com. Warning: PNG web sites seem to come and go. The fact of life is that it costs money to host a web site and there is not much return on the outlay to most businesses in PNG.

If you do click on a link and use the services or even have some comments to make then please contact the people at the relevant web site and let them know so they at least know that someone has gained some value from their efforts. If you are so inclined then mention that you heard about them from this web site. -- The PNG Gossip Newsletter.

Port Moresby Hospital

Beds are in short supply for women at the Port Moresby General Hospital. It also lacks proper facilities and has a shortage of midwives due to a lack funding. According to unit nurse coordinator, Sister Jennifer Piakalyia, the number of women giving birth in a day is between 40 and 50, but there were not enough beds available, forcing some of the women to sleep and rest in the corridors and in the reception area of ward 10.

Buai Skyrockets

The price of betelnut has increased dramatically with a shortage in Port Moresby. Some chewers are paying K1 for one nut or 50t for half a nut.

Betelnut (areca catechu) is the seed of the areca palm which grows in much of the tropical Pacific, Asia and parts of east Africa. The palm grows to 15 meters in some parts of PNG and it has dark green leaves, a ringed trunk and has fragrant, scented white flowers. The fruit is the size of a hen's egg measuring about 50mm (2 inches) long and contains a seed about the size of an acorn. The fruit is usually green in colour, then as it matures it turns orange in colour.

It is claimed by the PNG Medical Society that chewing betelnut kills over 2000 people in PNG a year.

Who was Frank Fenner?

Frank Fenner, alongside the more often-cited DA Henderson, helped oversee the eradication of smallpox.

He worked on malaria in Papua New Guinea during the second world war, then helped discover the basics of the immune system, the distinction of self from non-self, a concept that still informs immunology even though it has had to be modified. Some thought he should have shared in the 1960 Nobel awarded for that research to colleague MacFarlane Burnet and others.

For his work in combating malaria in PNG he was made a Member of The Order of the British Empire in 1945.
