School Teachers
How many teachers are finding out that they do not have tickets to return home for the end of year holidays? Year after year the same story is seen. Currently all teachers are entitled to air travel for themselves and their immediate families regardless of where they reside and this has been so for many, many years so should not be a surprise for provincial governments.

Bougainville Copper Mine
Sir Michael Somare says he hopes the Bougainville copper mine can be reopened within two years. The prime minister said reopening the Bougainville mine would cost about US$4 billion. The Panguna mine was closed 20 years ago amid secessionist violence. The copper reserves have reportedly been estimated at almost 3 million tonnes and gold production in the range of 400,000 ounces per annum making Panguna one of the world's largest potential producers of both metals.
Extractive Industries Transparency
The PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum has called on the PNG government to sign up to an international anti-corruption initiative. The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, begun in 2003, is designed to help countries clean up their mining and resources industry by publishing the details of all revenue received, in a format easily understood by all citizens.

Homes Torched
Several homes have been torched, gardens destroyed and several trade stores looted during a conflict between two Highlands region ethnic groups, the Engan and Eastern Highlands people. Residents of Horse Camp in Sabama, Port Moresby feared for their lives until police were able to calm the situation. It has been reported the trouble stemmed from a fight between young men, believed to be drunk and under the influence of marijuana, in a nearby market.

Tribal fighting is still a common practice in many parts of PNG where compensation and retribution are an integral part of the custom and culture.
Ok Tedi Mine
Ok Tedi general manager, Ian Sheppard, told a conference in Sydney that a study was due in mid 2011 to look at extending the life of the mine and that it did not intend to close the mine in 2013, adding the mine could run at 100,000 tonnes per year after this date.
Special Boots
Dozens of medical boots (non-surgical Ponseti boots) which do wonders for people suffering from club foot have been donated to PNG by the Royal London Hospital, in the East End of London, UK. In the developing world there are up to six children with club feet per 1,000.
The used boots, worth UK£44.92 each, would have been sent to landfill if not forwarded to PNG.
Piso Declared Gutnius Bishop
Bishop David Piso has been declared as the duly elected head bishop of Gutnius Lutheran church of PNG by the National Court. The court's decision in Wabag hopefully has put to rest the leadership tussle between Piso and other pastors of the church.

GG Election Invalid
The election of Sir Paulias Matane on the 25th of June this year for a second term as the Governor General of PNG has been ruled unconstitutional and invalid by PNG's Supreme Court. The full bench of the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the appointment was unconstitutional because Sir Paulias was not selected after a secret ballot in parliament.

Cabinet Reshuffle
Prime Minister Michael Somare, in his 42nd year in parliament, has carried out a cabinet reshuffle. It is seen as a pre-emptive strike to strengthen up his control as he faces being forced to stand down by the Supreme Court. It seems his priority was to ensure that the person acting as prime minister during his enforced period of rest will act in his best interests.
Mr Somare has been accused of failing to file annual returns, since 1995, listing his assets and business dealings, as required by law, to the Ombudsman Commission, which polices corruption by administering PNG's leadership code.

Somare Steps Aside
Prime Minister Michael Somare has announced he will step aside as the country's leader so he can face a leadership tribunal regarding alleged misconduct in office. Sir Michael is challenging his referral by the Ombudsman Commission over allegedly not submitting annual returns to the commission between 1993 and 1998. It has been alleged by the opposition Sir Michael failed to lodge annual leadership returns for the periods 1994-1995, 1995-1996 and 1996-1997. His returns for 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2003-2004 were submitted late while for 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1997-1998 and 1999-2000 the statements were incomplete.
Sir Michael sent a press release late on Monday night (13 Dec 2010) outlining his plan to "voluntarily step aside" after his lawyers earlier in the day failed to stop the public prosecutor advising the country's Chief Justice to set up a leadership tribunal.

Computer Donation
The Taiwanese government has donated 23 desktop computers, 19 sets of DDR II memory and a digital camera to the Apec digital opportunity centre (ADOC) at the University of Technology (Unitech) in Lae, Morobe province. The Taiwanese government has so far spent more than US$12 million to set up 43 ADOC projects in 10 partner member countries including PNG.
Vice-chancellor, Dr Misty Baloiloi, said Unitech had embraced the ADOC concept to compliment its rural outreach concept.
Fuel Prices
The Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) has announced petrol prices had increased to K3.30 per litre, an increase of 6 toea; diesel had increased to K2.81 per litre, an increase of 7 toea; and kerosene had increased to K2.73 per litre, an increase of 6 toea in Port Moresby. Retail prices at other centres would vary, depending on the applicable in-country shipping and road freight rates charged by the oil distributors. The ICCC CEO, Dr Billy Manoka, has urged all fuel suppliers and retailers not to charge above the allowable indicative retail price level.
Lost Money Found
A cheque, for over K1 million belonging to the Telefomin people in West Sepik, lost in a taxi by a politician, has been found. The cheque was returned to Telefomin MP Peter Iwei's parliament office following widespread publicity and public appeal.
Telefomin has a population of about 40,000 people who share a common border with Indonesia.
Armoured Vehicle Robbed
An armoured vehicle travelling between Wewak and Maprik has been held up by robbers armed with two AR15 rifles, a pistol, a Winchester and an axe. The thieves escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.
MP Charged
Culture and Tourism Minister and Kerowagi MP Guma Wau has been committed to stand trial in the National Court for an alleged attempted murder by the Kundiawa Committal Court. Wau allegedly committed the offence on the 13th of June whilst travelling from his Kerowagi electorate to Kundiawa when stopped at a roadblock near the Urinigle section of the Highlands Highway.

NBC Stifled
It has been speculated that the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) made changes to its newsroom at the peak of the present political crisis to gag reports of negative political events affecting the Somare government. Managing Director, Memafu Kapera, denied there was any Government directive to control or gag the NBC newsroom.

Squatters Face Eviction
The PNG office for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says the prospects for the latest group of squatters facing eviction in Port Moresby are dire. Up to 800 squatters, including West Papuan refugees, were last week evicted from a section between the capital's 8-Mile and 9-Mile settlements which is owned by a former MP, Sir Pita Lus, who wants to develop the land.
