Cairns / Rabaul Direct
In its bid to promote tourism Air Niugini has opened up a new direct service between Cairns, Rabaul and Cairns on a trial basis. The inaugural service operates every Monday and Friday.

OilSearch Find
Oil Search has made a potentially sizeable oil find near its producing SE Mananda field in the Southern Highlands. The company said logs indicated the Mananda-6 well contained two separate oil columns, one of 18 metres in the Toro formation and the other of 40 metres in the Imburu and Digimu formations.

Fish Processing
The biggest fish processing plant in the region has opened in Lae. The plant is an investment by Thai Union, the world's biggest fish processor. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says the opening of the Majestic Seafoods plant could create close to 7,000 jobs.

Smoking in Public
Smoking in public places has been banned, according to the National Executive Council (NEC).
These include all:
- Public motor vehicles (PMVs) and taxis;
- Government vehicles and boats including those used by the armed forces;
- Terminals and aeroplanes (other than private charters);
- Restaurants, cafes, shops (including betting shops and supermarkets and stores);
- Enclosed locations in hotels, clubs and bars (except in open areas or in hotel rooms designated for sleeping and/or for smokers);
- Offices and any enclosed working environment both public and private; and
- Educational facilities.

Kapris Reward
Deputy Police Commissioner Simon Kauba has announced the reward for information leading to the recapture of William Kapris has been increased to K50,000. A reward of K50,000 has also been offered for convicted killer, Walimini.

Bougainville Ferry
Bougainville president, John Momis, says his government is in a joint venture with a Port Moresby businessman to have a sea-going ferry built in China. The ferry will fill the gap left by the sinking of the Rabaul Queen early last year.

Bicycle Ride
A team of eight Australian adventurers will cycle approx. 700 km through some of the roughest terrain in PNG during July to raise funds for a multi-purpose women's domestic violence refuge in the Lae. The ride will be followed by a 100 km trek over the legendary Kokoda Trail.

Wabag Fight
Police and primary school students have fought in Wabag, Enga province, leaving a number of students hospitalised and the town police station damaged. The town came to a standstill for about an hour before order was restored by a visiting PNG Defence Force unit with the support of community leaders.

Service Station Damaged
Police have reported damage to a service station in Goroka by passengers and drivers on tulaittulait buses travelling through from Madang and Lae recently. Eastern Highlands provincial police commander David Seine Jnr blamed the incident on the extended trading hours of alcohol and the presence of people from other provinces squatting in Goroka.

Air Niugini Sponsors Kumuls
The National Airline has signed an agreement to sponsor the PNG Rugby League Kumuls for the next five years. Air Niugini Deputy Chairman Sir Fred Reiher and Team Kumul Director Mal Meninga jointly signed the sponsorship agreement.
Pinang Festival
The Jayapura city administration is working in conjunction with the Indonesian Consulate in Vanimo, Papua New Guinea (PNG), to hold the Pinang Festival at the Skouw marketing point on Saturday with the theme, "Tradition Unites Friendship".

Fiji Firms Keen on PNG
About 15 new companies from Fiji have expressed interest in venturing into PNG following a recent trade mission. Fiji High Commissioner to PNG Romanu Tikotikoca said most of the Fiji companies were planning further trips to Port Moresby to pursue business arrangements with local partners.

Security will be boosted in the National Capital during the second State of Origin clash in Australia, after violence flared between supporters during the first clash.

Judge Attacked
Senior judge David Cannings has been attacked near the Madang Country Club by a group of youths. The newspaper, The National, reports that the Madang-based judge was returning to his home in Kalibobo when a group of youths stopped his car at gunpoint, assaulted him and took his vehicle.

Crying Meri
Russian born photographer Vlad Sokhin has been documenting the results of this violence against women since 2012 through a project called "Crying Meri". (Meri is Tok Pisin for women). He shares his portraits of the victims and shares their stories, as they were told to him.

Cattle Industry
The Cairns Chamber of Commerce in Australia is working closely with the PNG and Australian Governments to work out specific details on shipping North Queensland cattle to PNG. The original concept of swapping aid money for cattle in countries including Indonesia, has met with a lukewarm response from the Australian federal government.

40 Hour Famine
New Zealanders have raised more than $65 million since the 40 Hour Famine began 39 years ago. Proceeds this year will go to Papua New Guinea where hunger leads to anaemic mums, malnourished children and the second worst child death rate in the Asia-Pacific region. A quarter of all children under the age of 5 years are suffering from diarrhoea, which is a life-threatening illness. Access to good health services, clean water and proper sanitation therefore is critical.

Another LNG?
Papua New Guinea's A$20 billion LNG project is only months away from yielding dividends, but already a new group of global prospectors are lining up to commence a second project of similar nature. French giant Total Oil and Australian Oil Search - both familiar with potential riches in the vast PNG fields - are talking up their chances of a new liquefied natural gas project in the Gulf of Papua even before the flagship LNG project gets off the ground.

Vale Simon Nigi
The provincial police commander for the new Jiwaka province has been killed in a motor vehicle accident. It is believed Supt Simon Nigi was driving the vehicle when it ran off the road near Sigiri Mountain, Jiwaka. Police are yet to establish the cause of the accident.

Marine Industrial Zone
