Kiaps Recognised

This week, Australian Home Affairs Minister, Jason Clare, awarded the Police Overseas Service Medal to 55 former Australian members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary in recognition of their service as "Kiaps" between 1949 and 1973.

Of the 2000 kiaps, official records show 23 died on duty, but some believe it could really be as high as 40.

Soldiers Attack Students

A group of more than 30 soldiers armed with bush knives, iron bars and firearms have broken down the gates to the Port Moresby General Hospital on Sunday and attacked people, leaving a medical student seriously injured, in what was believed to be a revenge attack. At least six gun shots were fired during the attack. The soldiers have alleged they were attacked by the students during a dispute over the use of an ATM at the hospital on Friday night.

National Museum Donation

A 92 year-old collector and former PNG resident Gabriel Keleny has decided to return between three and four hundred sculptures, art works and other cultural artifacts collected over the 30 years he spent living and working there.

Stadium Upgrade

Work will soon start on upgrading the Sir John Guise Stadium to international standards, for the 2015 Pacific Games.

NIP Staff Suspended

New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan has suspended five senior staff members in a sweeping move to get rid of inefficiency, poor productivity and cronyism in his administration.

University Rehabilitation

The National Executive Council has approved K500 million to rehabilitate all the universities in Papua New Guinea. Parliament was also told that the real cost of under graduate university cost is about K30,000 per student and the National Government was seriously looking at fully funding university education for its citizens.

Jiwaka Teacher's College

Groundwork has started on a proposed teachers' college at Nondugl in Jiwaka. Locals donated 10 hectares of land for the construction of the college.

Travel Air Bougainville

Travel Air operating under the trademark of Mangi Lo Ples will soon be operating in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Sales and Marketing Manager of Travel Air, Jim Winfrey and Ground Operations General Manager John Eri recently held discussions with the ABG Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Carolus Ketsimur and a representative from the Office of the ABG President, for the airline to start its operations in the region.

Ancient Cricket

The historical district of Salamaua in the Morobe Province has discovered a hidden cement cricket pitch in the small village of Laugui at the Salamaua Point. The historical discovery confirms reports of cricket matches being played between Wau, Bulolo & Salamaua in the 1930's.

Betelnut in Danger

Betelnut is now under threat of being wiped out by an unknown disease that has already decimated a number of betelnut plantations in Markham valley in Morobe and parts of Manus province. Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Tommy Tomscoll has told Parliament during Question Time that the National Quarantine and Agriculture Authority will go to affected areas to undertake investigations.

Aussie PM Visit

The recent visit to Port Moresby by Australian PM Kevin Rudd focused on discussions over the future of PNG's LNG gas project, concerns over law and order and the state of PNG hospitals.

Mr Rudd was joined by Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke. Mr Burke said his attendance was required as the meetings were "particularly significant" in the lead up to the regional summit announced by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Private POM Wharf

Construction of a new private wharf and boat ramp in Port Moresby will be completed by the end of the year, according to Karthik Pajjala, General Manager of Avenell Engineering Systems Ltd, and the builders of the wharf.

Universities

The PNG Government is pouring K500 million (US$222 million) into universities to roll out and upgrade programmes for increased intakes of students coming off secondary schools, Higher Education, Science and Research Technology Minister David Arore said.

Air Niugini

The National Airline has taken on Fokker Services ABACUS program for its fleet of Dash 8 /Q100/Q200/Q300 turboprops.

ABACUS is the longest running Component Availability program in aviation history, supporting more than 200 aircraft and serving more than 30 operators of regional aircraft, such as the Dash 8 turboprop.

PNG rugby league chief denies sport is a magnet for violence after Highlands's riot. The brawl happened near the end of a local rugby league game between the Lae Snax Tigers from Morobe Province and the Enga Mioks from the Enga Province.

The Papua New Guinea National Executive Council (NEC) has agreed to pursue amendments to the Constitution to allow dual citizenship and to remove doubts regarding the legality of regional asylum seeker processing arrangements.

PNG Football (Soccer)

The PNG men's team is currently ranked 194th in the world and ninth in Oceania. With a population of over seven million, Papua New Guinea is one of the largest of OFC's member associations but their strength in numbers has yet to translate into dominance on the football pitch.

Prison Commander Sidelined

The commander at Bomana Jail, Joe Jako, has been stood down following reports that he had allowed convicted murderer Theo Yasause to leave the prison without proper approval. Correctional Service Commissioner Martin Balthazar Monday announced the appointment of Kerevat Jail commander, Chief Supt Kiddy Keko, as acting commander of the country's largest prison.

Abuse Clinic Opened

The first frontline clinic to offer treatment for both medical and psychological injuries of victims of physical and sexual abuse has opened in Papua New Guinea; a country that researchers say is potentially the worst place in the world for gender violence.
