Write for Peace
Keith Jackson's PNG Attitude has put up K500 towards 'write for peace' and the completion now has a name - "The Annual Val Rivers Write for Peace Prize". The Essay and Poetry Contest is for those people who are both writers and thinkers. The K500 is for the best piece of writing designed to promote a peaceful and harmonious Papua New Guinea. For this first year of the prize, writers are asked to submit essays, articles or poems on the subject, "A good life for the people. Is there a Melanesian way?"
The winner of the K500 prize will be announced on Australian Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day) at 11 am: the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marking the end of World War I in 1918 and commemorated since in Commonwealth countries.

Australian Rugby League

Vale John Anis
Former Mr PNG title holder and five-time power lifting gold medalist John Anis from Kumdi in the Western Highlands province, was brutally murdered in Goroka last week. Mr Anis was traveling with four other men in a hired vehicle to Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province recently when he was shot at point blank range by one of the men sitting behind him inside the moving vehicle.

Black Tuesday
The tourism industry is reeling from the brutal attack on a group of trekkers walking the Black Cat Trail in the Morobe Province. According to sources close to the incident, the visitors were attacked at 4.30 pm on Tuesday by three men with one armed with a 303 rifle and two carrying bush knives who later fled into the bush. The porters were killed when they tried to defend the trekkers with one partially decapitated and another dying from a gunshot wound.

Anti-Betel Nut Campaign
Powes Parkop, the Governor of the National Capital District, has stepped up campaign to ban betel nut in the city he governs. Mr Parkop says betel nut chewing and spittle in public is "unhygienic" and cleaning up the red spittle is costing the city significant money.

PNG NBN
The country is pushing ahead with plans for a national broadband network (NBN) that will improve internet speeds and prices, marking a "transformative leap" for the country. It is estimated that users pay up to 200 times as much as their Australian counterparts for access to the Internet.
Consultant Sundar Ramamurthy, from Invoc Pty Ltd, has previously predicted consumers will see the benefits of lower prices and better access by mid-2014.

Innovated Pneumonia Treatment
PNG will be the testing ground for a new invention designed to overcome the challenges of treating pneumonia patients in remote areas.

Goroka Land Registration
A land registration exercise is underway in Goroka to free up land so the town can grow. Goroka MP and former cabinet minister, Bire Kimisopa, says they have been encouraging landowners to register their land and also getting the local authority to demarcate land that might be suitable for an expansion.

IMF
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission has concluded the 2013 Article IV Consultation with Papua New Guinea. The team met with the Minister for Treasury Don Polye, Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) Governor Loi Bakani, members of Parliament, and other senior public officials, as well as representatives from the private sector, think tanks and development partners. Staff from the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank joined the mission.

O'Neill Congratulates Abbott
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has sent a congratulatory message to the new Australian Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott. Mr O'Neill offered to meet with Mr Abbott "on the margins" of the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum meeting in Bali in early October.
PNG is Australia's largest aid recipient to the tune of $A500 million a year.

Chikungunya Virus
A Chikungunya outbreak was first detected in Papua New Guinea in June 2012 in Vanimo. Since then, cases spread to East New Britain province, New Ireland, Morobe, Eastern Highlands, West New Britain, Madang, Chimbu, National Capital District, Jiwaka and Manus provinces. It is also suspected to have occurred in Oro and Southern Highlands provinces, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Poker Machines
A new minimum bet of K100 has been introduced for players of poker machines. The decision to increase the amount for minimum bet from K50 to K100 is to discourage low-income earners and those in the informal sectors from getting into gambling, said the National Gaming Control Board.

Aussie Police
A group of 50 Australian police officers will be the first to arrive in PNG before Christmas as part of the exchange programme between the two countries. Mr O'Neill said on top of that group the Australian Federal Government has agreed to fund a further 150 policemen which Australian Prime Minister Abbott confirmed will be coming.
