Surfing PNG
An Aussie surfer has travelled to Tupira, in Madang province, to officially hand over 140 donated surfboards and equipment. Martin (Marty) Brown initiated the donation drive in Victoria for pre-loved surfboards and equipment in September 2012 after visiting PNG on a surf trip.

Aussie Police
The Police Association of Papua New Guinea has welcomed the presence of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in the country with open arms. National president Leuth Nidung said that the union was very supportive of having AFP officers work alongside their counterparts from the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).

Frabelle Diversification
Frabelle Fishing Corporation, one of three joint venture partners in the new tuna processing plant Majestic Seafoods that opened in Malahang, near Lae, has its own expansion plans. The firm, which will concentrate on selling to the local Papua New Guinea market, has an investment programme that includes the replacement of six of its 20 PNG-flagged catcher boats over the next two years and the construction of a new wharf.

Grenade Attack
As many as 14 people may have been killed in the Kagua-Erave district of the Southern Highlands province when several grenades were thrown as part of a tribal war, reports say. The Post Courier newspaper put the death toll at 14 after "a grenade was thrown into a house in a raid" and said it was expected to rise to 30, with at least eight houses burned to the ground.

Social Security
The elderly and disabled population will be the first groups to benefit from a social security system which will come into effect next year. Minister for Religion, Youth and Community Development Loujaya Kouza said during a recent Parliament Question Time that the plan for a social security system for the elderly and disabled would be budgeted for implementation next year.

Fiji wants to take advantage of the economic boom in Papua New Guinea and enhance its trade and investments, High Commissioner Romanu Tikotikoca said. He said this following Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama's recent announcement on the appointment of a trade commissioner to PNG.

Ok Tedi Mine
Former Papua New Guinea Mining Minister Sam Akoitai says the Ok Tedi mine should be closed by now if the previous agreements were adhered to.
He said the Government should shut the mine now so that the Western Province people will can benefit from the funding that is parked with the PNG Sustainable Development Program.

Stevedores Mess
Two new stevedores' mess facilities worth K4 million each have been built to boost port operations' efficiency in Port Moresby and Lae, the two biggest ports in PNG. PNG Ports Corporation Ltd (PNGPCL) chief executive officer Stanley Alphonse said their efforts were consistent with the strategy to provide efficient port services for all ports users including stevedores, who worked 24 hours, seven days a week to get healthy meals in a safe and clean environment.
